Back in the early 2000’s, three friends went sailing in the Caribbean and came up with an idea that would spark the controversy of the “most hated and loved shoe’ of all time. For over 20 years, Crocs were mainly funded by medical institutions and prison systems, which represents the declining free market fascination. During the Covid quarantines, the use of social media skyrocketed. The activity and watch times on apps were longer, which resulted in more trends becoming more prevalent. Celebrities like Justin Beiber, BabyTron, Nicki Minaj, John Cena, among many more were the pioneers of this movement. Crocs grew massively along with the many celebrity collaborations and brand deals like Balenciaga, Nintendo, KFC, Shrek, and more. “It’s not like people haven’t heard of using social media to create brand awareness and brand relevance, but this management team is just doing it better,” Jay Sole, a retail analyst at UBS, said. The Crocs’ company capitalized on their smart business decisions, paired with the excellent timing of their product in the free market.

Admittedly, Crocs does have many useful functionality options and various customization that a regular shoe or slide might not have. Crocs are also cheaper than your average sneaker, which makes the product more accessible to a wider scale of people. But, I also believe Crocs restricts a major part of the creative process with our outfits. I also believe it gives people bot confidence and acceptance. The percentage of the population that thought Crocs were cool and actually wore them, were miniscule compared to now. I regard that to be a result of bandwagoning from these TikTok apps, celebrities and companies, and trends in the community as a whole.

Crocs are cool, I get it. They have an innovative design to them, and are decently comfortable. But before you pick Crocs over any other shoe next time, think about why. Think about if you actually like Crocs for the shoe itself, or if you like it because you’re mind has been trained to do as such.
